Rangers updates: Josh Hamilton has another procedure; Could Mike Napoli play left again?

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Some notes from the MLB General Managers meetings at the exclusive Boca Raton Resort & Club Wednesday.

1. Rangers GM Jon Daniels isn't ready to give up on the Mike Napoli in left field thing. Daniels said the Rangers would like to take a further look at the possibilities if Napoli re-signs with Texas. The idea would be for Napoli to be competent enough in left to occasionally spell Josh Hamilton. It would create a better opportunity to squeeze in at-bats for Hamilton, Napoli, Mitch Moreland and Prince Fielder.

"I don't know if he can do it," Daniels said. "But I know he will put in the effort and the work. I don't think it's fair to judge him on 10 games when he basically did it on the fly."

Daniels said he believed Napoli would be open to the idea. Daniels is expected to get together with agent Brian Grieper next week to have further conversations.

2. Based on his defensive contributions and potential trade value, Leonys Martin will be tendered a contract by the Rangers before the Dec. 2 salary arbitration date.

"We will 100 percent tender him," Daniels said.

Martin made $4.75 million in 2015 in the last year of the initial contract he signed after defecting from Cuba.

Daniels also indicated that Martin has been one of the players in which the Rangers have received the most interest, based on his defensive abilities and offensive potential. The Rangers could tender him a contract and then deal him to another club, which would then pick up the arbitration case.

3. Josh Hamilton had an additional surgical procedure two weeks ago on his left knee about two weeks ago and began full rehab this week in Arlington.

Hamilton had a piece of his left meniscus removed in mid-September, then returned two weeks later. In one of his first games back, he collided with the wall and re-injured the knee. He is expected to be ready to go without limitation for spring training.

4. MLB VP Joe Torre said the league may look into tweaking instant replay challenge rules regarding calls where a runner briefly comes off the base during the process of a slide. The Rangers had several such calls work against them last year, particularly on head-first slides.

This is something that should be tweaked. If not, you are going to have to eliminate the head-first slide for players. It seems almost inevitable that during the slide, there is almost always an instant when the body is over the bag, but not on it.
