Defensive player of the week: Wylie's Matt Sandgren
What he did: With Wylie trailing by three inside the final five minutes in the Class 4A Division I Region II final, Tyler John Tyler receiver Greg Ward caught a slant, broke two tackles and appeared to be heading for the end zone. But Sandgren chased down Ward, batting the ball from his hands at the 1-yard line. The ball rolled out of the back of the end zone for a touchback. Wylie scored with 1:05 left.
Who he is: A 5-8, 160-pound senior outside linebacker
The stats: Eight tackles, tackle for loss and forced fumble
He said it: "When I dove for his legs, with my right arm I came over and tried to swipe the ball. ... [This playoff run's] amazing. If you asked any of us before the season started, we knew we were going to be good, but none of us would have dreamed this."
Coach said it: "That's the difference between being down three ... or down 10 with five to go and having to fight back like crazy. That play, it extended our season." - Bill Howard
