Soccer playoffs: Celina girls continue quest for historic third straight state title

Frisco Wakeland and Colleyville Heritage girls remain unbeaten.

Plano West is the only girls soccer team in UIL history to win three consecutive state championships, capturing titles in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Celina has a chance to match that feat this season.

Celina continued its quest for a third consecutive Class 4A state title by routing Pinkston 9-0 in an area-round playoff game Thursday. Sammy Quiroz scored three goals and freshman Hannah Holland, Ryleigh Stifflemire, Ashton Lowry, Claire Flowers, Charlie Schneider and Ella Norman also scored for Celina, which has won 16 consecutive playoff games and has outscored the opposition 97-8 during that streak.

Quiroz and Holland have combined to score seven of Celina’s 12 goals in two playoff games.

Celina, trying to reach the state tournament for the fourth consecutive season, is averaging 5.3 goals per game and has outscored its opponents 133-6. It picked up where it left off last season, when it routed Stephenville 8-1 in the state championship game to finish 29-0 and join Highland Park in 2017 and Humble Kingwood in 1995 as the only UIL girls teams to win state with no losses and no ties.

Celina came into this season with a 58-game unbeaten streak and is 21-2-2 this year after winning its last 14 games. It has continued to dominate despite losing All-Area Player of the Year Lexi Tuite to graduation after Tuite scored 64 goals in 2023 and became the first girl in UIL history to score five goals in a state tournament game.

Frisco Wakeland 7, W.T. White 0: Freshman Dilan Pistorius scored three goals and Wakeland continued its quest for a historic unbeaten season with a dominant win in a Class 5A area-round playoff game.

There have been 12 undefeated girls state champions in UIL history, with Dallas-area teams accounting for nine of those. Wakeland (21-0-2) has a chance to join that group, as does Colleyville Heritage (20-0-2), Southlake Carroll (22-0-1) and Duncanville (20-0-1).

Colleyville Heritage beat Azle on Thursday, and Carroll and Duncanville both play Friday.

Audrey Gilbert, Emma Sapp, Ava Yocum and Zara Pasha also scored goals for Wakeland, ranked No. 1 in the area and No. 8 in the state in 5A. Wakeland has outscored the opposition 105-12 and has posted 16 shutouts.

This is the seventh consecutive season that Wakeland has reached the third round of the playoffs, not counting 2020, when there was no postseason play because of the pandemic. That dominant run includes state titles in 2018 and 2022 and a state runner-up finish in 2021.

Wakeland advanced to play District 10-5A champion Prosper Walnut Grove at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at McKinney Boyd. Walnut Grove beat Sunset 5-0 on Thursday.

Colleyville Heritage 6, Azle 0: Rice signee Allie Love and freshman Addison Shimmick scored two goals apiece as District 7-5A champion Colleyville Heritage, ranked No. 5 in the state, extended its winning streak to 10.

Freshmen Addison Bizjack and Ashlyn Bringedahl also scored goals, and Love and freshman Emersen Andries had two assists apiece. Heritage has outscored the opposition 111-13.

Colleyville Heritage advanced to the regional quarterfinals for the third time in four years, with its 2022 team reaching the 5A Region I final. The only time Heritage didn’t make it to the third round during that span was last year, when it lost to Midlothian in the first round. That will be its next opponent.

Frisco Reedy 5, Hillcrest 1: Ashley Rabinowitz had a pair of goals and Lily Troiano, Kaira Boah and Zaara Jacobs also scored in Reedy’s area-round win. It was the eighth consecutive win for Reedy, the No. 3 seed from District 9-5A.

Reedy (16-6-3) is looking to make another deep playoff run after last year’s trip to the 5A Region II final, where it lost to Frisco in a shootout. Reedy was playing in a regional tournament for the first time and is now one win away from returning there.

Rockwall 1, Mansfield 0: Morgan Countryman gave Rockwall a 1-0 lead with a goal off a rebound in the first half, and that was the only score of the game.

Rockwall is headed to the regional quarterfinals for the third straight year. It was the Class 6A state runner-up in 2022, losing to Southlake Carroll in the championship match.

Keller Timber Creek 2, San Angelo Central 0 (OT): Abby Balios scored in the first overtime period and Tomai Triplett added a goal in the second extra period as Timber Creek, the No. 4 seed from District 4-6A, advanced to the 6A Region I quarterfinals.

Timber Creek is among three teams from District 4-6A remaining in the playoffs after Keller lost to Wolfforth Frenship in a shootout Thursday. District 4-6A champion Southlake Carroll and 4-6A runner-up Trophy Club Byron Nelson both play their area-round game Friday, with Timber Creek awaiting the winner of the Carroll vs. Midland game.

Anna 5, North Dallas 1: Ella Anderson scored three goals and Isabellle Lopez and Alyssa Gonzalez added one goal apiece in Anna’s 4A area-round win.

This is the fourth consecutive season that Anna (20-3) has advanced to the regional quarterfinals. Anna was a regional finalist last season, losing to eventual state champion Celina in the 4A Region II championship game.

Boys

Denton 2, Aledo 1: First-half goals from Chris Guillen and Jose Blas were enough for Denton to advance to the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 2015.

Prosper Walnut Grove 1, W.T. White 0: Ryan Schryver scored the only goal off an assist by Luke Bitner. Walnut Grove, in its first year of existence, advanced to face the winner of Friday’s Frisco Wakeland vs. Mesquite Poteet game.

El Paso Montwood 2, Euless Trinity 1: Montwood, the No. 3 seed from District 1-6A, surprised 3-6A champion Trinity in the second round of the playoffs. Montwood awaits the winner of Friday’s Keller vs. El Paso Pebble Hills game.
