Softball/baseball: Nationally ranked Denton Guyer rolls to first-round playoff sweep

Colleyville Heritage rallies for wild win; no-hitter propels Flower Mound to undefeated district record.

Texas State signee Erin Peterson fell a home run short of hitting for the cycle, and nationally ranked Denton Guyer started its quest to return to the UIL softball state tournament by beating Flower Mound 7-2 on Friday to complete a two-game sweep of its first-round Class 6A playoff series.

Peterson was 3-for-3 and scored three runs to help the nation’s 17th-ranked team extend its winning streak to 10 games and sweep a series in which it outscored Flower Mound 21-5. Guyer (30-2), the state runner-up last year, started the scoring with a two-out, two-run single by Gracie Willis in the bottom of the first and never trailed in a game in which Oregon signee Kaylynn Jones hit an inside-the-park home run leading off the fourth that made it 5-2.

Colleyville Heritage 15, Midlothian Heritage 14: After seeing Midlothian Heritage take the lead with a seven-run top of the seventh, Colleyville Heritage responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to win a wild Game 2 and sweep its first-round 5A playoff series.

Colleyville Heritage, a state semifinalist last year, led 7-1 after one inning and 11-7 going to the top of the seventh. It was one out from victory with an 11-10 lead before an error allowed two runs to score and gave Midlothian Heritage a 12-11 lead. Midlothian Heritage added two more runs in the inning on a run-scoring error and an RBI single by Ava Robinson.

But Colleyville Heritage (26-10) tied it 14-14 on an RBI double by Luna Flores, a bases-loaded walk to Lindsey McConnell and a sacrifice fly by Eden Cole. With two outs and runners on first and third, an error allowed Colleyville Heritage to score the winning run.

Graci Green homered for Colleyville Heritage and was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs, while Cole was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Myka Riley had two hits and scored two runs.

Allen 11, Plano West 0: Morgan Wright pitched a six-inning no-hitter and Finlee Williams and Micaela Booth had three RBIs apiece as the area’s fifth-ranked 6A team tied its bi-district playoff series at one win apiece. Game 3 is scheduled for noon Saturday at Plano West. Wright registered her 400th career strikeout in the win.

Celeste McCary homered for Allen (27-8-1), and Britlyn Tripp went 3-for-4 and scored three runs. A day after being held to two runs and four hits, Allen scored five runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back as Wright came within a second-inning walk of throwing a perfect game.

Hebron 2-10, McKinney 4-4: Alyssa Sneed hit two home runs and had five RBIs as Hebron beat McKinney 10-4 in the decisive third game of a best-of-3 6A first-round playoff series.

Kate Buesing and Sneed homered during a three-run top of the seventh that put the game out of reach, and Sneed finished 3-for-4 and scored three runs. Hebron (20-8-2), ranked No. 8 in the area, got a five-hitter from pitcher Lucy Crowder and advanced to play District 7-6A champion Lake Highlands.

Crowder’s RBI single in the top of the third gave Hebron a 2-0 lead, and Sneed hit a two-out, three-run home run later in the inning to make it 5-0. McKinney got right back in the game in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs.

Caydance Gaddis and Kady Huggins had RBI singles for McKinney in the inning, and Michayla Franzen hit a two-run home run. Hebron extended the lead to 7-4 on a two-out RBI single by Alyssa Summers in the fifth.

McKinney won Game 2 of the series 4-2 earlier in the day thanks to a three-run bottom of the fifth. Gaddis led off the inning with a triple and scored on a two-run home run by Adyson Gaddis that gave McKinney a 3-2 lead.

Caydance Gaddis scattered seven hits and struck out six while going 2-for-4 in the win.

Lake Highlands 5, Arlington 1: Brooke Bouldin struck out 10 and worked around 11 hits and three walks while pitching a complete game as Lake Highlands won a one-game playoff.

Lake Highlands, which won its first district title since 2013, got two hits and two runs apiece from Bouldin and Peri Dunham, and Tessa Horton was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Keller 8, Fort Worth Paschal 2: Lauren Kavanaugh was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Tarleton State signee Sadie Beck struck out 10 as Keller bounced back from a stunning Game 1 loss on Thursday to even its best-of-3 series at one win apiece. Game 3 is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Saginaw.

Keller (22-8-2), ranked No. 2 in the area in 6A and a regional finalist last year, scored seven runs in the first three innings a day after being held to two runs.

Prosper Walnut Grove 6, The Colony 0: Lyndsey Hooker pitched six shutout innings and went 3-for-4 and scored a run as the state’s fourth-ranked 5A team won Game 1 of its series and extended its winning streak to 29 games.

Walnut Grove (32-2), in its first year of varsity softball, got two RBIs from Lauren Robinson and two runs from Ella Berlage.

Frisco Reedy 15, Frisco Lebanon Trail 9: Megan Lau went 4-for-5, scored four runs and drove in two as Reedy rallied from an early 5-1 deficit and swept its 5A bi-district series.

Reedy trailed 8-5 before scoring six runs in the top of the sixth. Lau and Sierra Petersdorf started that rally with back-to-back RBI singles before a bases-loaded fielder’s choice, a run-scoring passed ball and an RBI groundout gave Reedy a 10-8 lead. Paige Sommers finished the inning with a two-out RBI single.

Reedy added four more runs in the seventh with the help of an RBI single by Petersdorf, a two-run double by Mycah McClendon and a sacrifice fly by Campbell McKee. Petersdorf and McClendon combined to go 5-for-7 with six runs and four RBIs.

Baseball

Flower Mound 3, Hebron 0: The nation’s fourth-ranked team completed an undefeated run through District 6-6A by beating second-place Hebron as Cooper Harris pitched a no-hitter. Harris walked three and threw 94 pitches as Flower Mound extended its winning streak to 18 games.

Flower Mound (30-3, 14-0), the defending 6A state champion and ranked No. 1 in the state, took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Garrett Wallace in the bottom of the fourth and then got an RBI single by Texas State signee Josh Glaser an inning later that made it 3-0. Flower Mound swept back-to-back games from Hebron, which had a shot at the district title going into the final series of the regular season.

Grapevine 5, Richland 2: With the District 7-5A title already locked up, Grapevine had five pitchers combine for 10 strikeouts and won for the 13th time in 14 games. Grapevine (28-3, 13-1), ranked No. 3 in the state in 5A, got a home run from Ryan Williams and three hits and two RBIs from Sammy Kelley.

Celina 4, Anna 0: Colby Brittain allowed three hits in six shutout innings and Connor Rabe was 2-for-4 with two RBIs as the state’s second-ranked 4A team finished 12-0 in District 11-4A.
