Elvis Andrus on getting over disastrous Game 5: 'I have nothing to be ashamed about;' 'That's baseball'

ARLINGTON -- Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus insisted on Monday that he will not allow a disastrous Game 5 of the American League Division Series crush him.

Andrus mishandled a grounder and dropped a throw for two errors in the fateful seventh inning, helping Toronto score four runs and rally for a 6-3 win that clinched the series. The Rangers had gone ahead, 3-2, in the inning.

In addition, the Rangers' second ended when Andrus was thrown out trying to steal third.

"The bad things, I learn from that and put it in the past," said Andrus, who assisted teammate Robinson Chirinos in providing a Thanksgiving dinner and cold-weather clothing for residents of the Arlington Life Shelter. "For sure, what happened last y ear is something that is going to make me work harder.

"I don't think about it. It was a long process, but I'm in a good spot right now."

The debacle in Toronto represented only the nine time that Andrus has had multiple errors in 1,071 career starts in the regular season and playoffs. It was the third time that he had multiple errors in an inning.

Andrus said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from current and past teammates, opponents and fans. If there were any negative reaction aimed at him, they did not register with Andrus.

"I have nothing to be ashamed about," Andrus said. "That's baseball. Unfortunately, it happened to me. That's something I will learn from, something that for sure will help in the rest of my career."

Andrus was able to watch the remainder of the playoffs without feeling depressed. To him, that was a positive sign.

"That happens in life," Andrus said of the Toronto mishap. "There are a lot of ups and downs. I'm still here.

"I know I've got a lot of baseball in myself and a lot of good things that are going to happen. That'll start next year."

Andrus went into the Division Series after good second half in the field. He had 15 errors in 86 games before the All-Star break and seven errors in 74 games after the break.

The Fielding Bible gave Andrus a full-season score of minus-1 in the metric of runs saved, which put him 17th among major-league shortstops. In 2014, he had a minus-13 score.
