Jon Daniels: Hard to not expect success from Profar in 2016...as long as his shoulder holds up

Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels recently joined The Ben and Skin Show on KRLD-FM (105.3) to talk offseason baseball. Here are some highlights:

On the theme of the last few World Series winners having a dominant catcher...

JD: I don't think there's a formula. I think you can win with everything. If you remember - a long time ago, you had to have an elite shortstop, and the Angels won with David Eckstein. People started using that as 'you can win with any mix.'

Bottom line - if you have a stud behind the plate, that's a huge advantage. They impact both sides of the ball so much. I don't think it's a coincidence you see these teams with franchise catchers invest in them and keep them...you talk about number one starters, every team has their 'number one,' but how many true number ones are there? There aren't 30 to go around. Same thing with catchers.

On Jurickson Profar's progress this offseason...

JD: All signs are positive right now. His throwing program's great, he's absolutely killing it with the bat in the Fall League...he doesn't have any concerns about the shoulder. He's attempted a number of stolen bases. He's diving head first into bags, and he feels 100 percent. We're just being extremely cautious because of how rough the last two years have been. He's playing with that smile, infectious energy...it's hard to watch him and not expect him to have success next year - as long as that shoulder holds up.
