North Texas guard Jason Edwards plans to enter his name in the transfer portal. He was a first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection in his debut season at UNT.
Edwards averaged 19.2 points per game in his lone season with the Mean Green. He was named to the All-American Athletic Conference first team and scored 650 points this season, a total that ranks fifth in program history.
Edwards scored in double figures in UNT’s last 27 games this season and helped guide the Mean Green to the second round of National Invitation Tournament. UNT fell to Seton Hall despite 23 points from Edwards.
UNT and coach Ross Hodge won a recruiting battle with a host of programs, including Seton Hall and Georgia Tech, to land Edwards after his standout junior college career. He was named a first-team NJCAA All-American in his lone season at Dodge City Community College in Kansas before signing with UNT, one of the programs intrigued by his abilities as a 6-foot scoring guard.
“I am grateful for the opportunity Hodge gave me,” Edwards said late in the season. “He’s familiar with junior college level and had faith in me to come in and help the team win.”
Edwards did just that and posted five outings with at least 30 points this season. He scored 37 points in a win over Tulane in January.
Edwards is the first key UNT player who has headed to the transfer portal since the end of a 19-15 season in Hodge’s debut campaign.
Backup forward Chris Morgan previously announced his intention to transfer.
