First round updates

- The Cowboys have finally made a pick. With the 29th selection, Dallas takes Oklahoma tackle Tyler Guyton. The move likely means Tyler Smith will stay at left guard, where he earned a Pro Bowl berth. Click here to read more about Guyton and the Cowboys’ moves on the first day of the draft.

- The Cowboys could look to acquire more picks by trading out of the first round, according to The News’ Calvin Watkins. Various offensive linemen remain on the board.

- According to The News’ Calvin Watkins, the Cowboys have interest in Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson and BYU offensive lineman Kingsley Suamataia. Dallas officially received the 29th and 73rd overall picks through its trade with Detroit, sending No. 24 and a 2025 seventh-rounder.

- The Dallas Cowboys are trading down from the No. 24 overall pick, sending it to the Detroit Lions. Dallas will now pick at No. 29 overall. The Cowboys also sent the Lions a 2025 seventh-rounder and picked up a third-round pick (No. 73).

- According to The Dallas Morning News’ Michael Gehlken, the Cowboys have received trade interest at No. 24 overall. They have the option to increase their pick stockpile, and they’re seriously considering it.

- At 23, the Jaguars select LSU receiver Brian Thomas. And the Cowboys are on the clock at 24.

- The Eagles, picking two spots ahead of the Cowboys at 22, select cornerback Quinyon Mitchell of Toledo. And with only one pick to go before the Cowboys are on the clock, offensive linemen Graham Barton of Duke and Tyler Guyton of Oklahoma are still on the board. The Cowboys should have their choice of a handful of quality linemen here.

- The Cowboys see another offensive tackle come off the board. This time it was Washington’s Troy Fautanu, who went at No. 20 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Fautanu went lower than projected, almost slipping to Dallas at 24. Alas, it wasn’t to be.

- According to The News’ David Moore, Mims was in the mix for the Cowboys’ selection. Moore doesn’t believe Mims was ahead of Troy Fautanu, Graham Barton and Tyler Guyton on Dallas’ board.

- Another offensive lineman comes off the board in Georgia’s Amarius Mims. After being selected with the 18th overall pick, Mims will join the Cincinnati Bengals to protect quarterback Joe Burrow. Some movement also took place before that pick as Minnesota moved up to No. 17 in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

- Plenty of offensive linemen are on the board as pick No. 24 approaches. Offensive tackles Joe Alt, JC Latham and Taliese Fuaga already found new homes. According to The Dallas Morning News’ David Moore, Fuaga was the first player off the board who visited The Star ahead of the draft.

- Giants add an offensive weapon: The New York Giants selected LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers at No. 6 overall. Instead of selecting a quarterback, the Giants add another piece to their offense to work with signal caller Daniel Jones.

- Dan Quinn, Commanders make their pick at No. 2 overall: The Washington Commanders have selected their quarterback of the future, landing former LSU signal caller and Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. He was the second quarterback off the board, going one spot after Caleb Williams.

Quinn, the former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator, will have a young offensive weapon to work with as he tries to elevate the Commanders.

Early updates

- Eagles reportedly agree to new deal with WR A.J. Brown: According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Philadelphia Eagles agreed to a three-year, $96 million extension with A.J. Brown. The deal includes $84 million guaranteed.

- Roger Goodell talks Chiefs WR Rashee Rice: Before the first round kicked off, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell offered an update on Rashee Rice’s standing with the league.

“First, we allow the legal process to move through. We obviously are following it closely,” Goodell said on ESPN’s 2024 NFL draft pre-show. “As soon as we are done with the process, we will be engaged and prepared to look at that under all of our personal conduct policies.”

Rice, 23, and Theodore Knox, 21, each face a count of aggravated assault, a count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury, police have said.

- Dallas looking to move back? DMN’s David Moore reported Thursday afternoon that depending on how the early first-round scramble of picks shakes out, the Cowboys are prepared — and may actually prefer — to move back if they can strike the right deal, rather than make a selection at No. 24.
