Woodrow Wilson clinches share of District 12-4A softball title
In front of a large crowd at Randall Park on April 18, the Woodrow Wilson Softball Team defeated Hillcrest High School by a score of 13-3. The victory secured a tie with Bryan Adams High School for the 12-4A District Championship.
The Lady Wildcats, led by second year coach Holly Gutterud, fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning before storming back to take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the first.
Big hits by senior Samantha Tapia and freshman Lauren Spellman keyed the rally. In the bottom of the third, Woodrow broke the game open by scoring 9 runs, highlighted by a two-run home run by junior Alia Soto. Carly Jordan, a junior, was the winning pitcher, throwing a complete game and keeping the Panthers off-balance with an assortment of pitches; striking out five batters.
Big defensive plays were made by junior Eileen Munoz at first base and outfielder Endora Smith. Senior Baylee Willingham made a strong relay throw to cut down a runner trying to advance to third.
After the game, Tapia, Willingham and Caitlyn Nealy, the seniors, were honored with their parents. The Wildcats have had a great regular season and are looking forward to the playoffs.
