State volleyball roundup: The Woodlands achieves perfection
GARLAND — The Woodlands polished off a perfect season with a 25-22, 26-24, 25-17 victory against San Antonio Churchill in the Class 5A volleyball championship Saturday at the Curtis Culwell Center.
The Woodlands, which is the top-ranked team in the state and nation, finished the season with a 45-0 record and won its first title in two trips to the state tournament. It lost only five sets during its 45 victories.
Setter Courtney Eckenrode tallied 46 assists, two kills, 11 digs and two blocks to earn championship MVP honors. Courtney Quinn had a team-high 14 kills, and Kelly Quinn led the defense with 24 digs.
Churchill sophomore hitter Abby Buckingham, who is committed to Texas, had a match-high 19 kills.
Decatur d. Bellville, 25-21, 25-18, 27-25: Top-ranked Decatur made the most of its first trip to the state tournament, winning the Class 3A championship with a sweep.
Cooper Martin led Decatur (41-7) with 16 kills. Stormi Leonard led the defense with 18 digs, and Katie Isham had a match-high four blocks.
Bellville committed 32 attack and service errors, while Decatur recorded only 16 miscues.
Bushland d. Schulenburg, 25-23, 24-26, 17-25, 26-24, 15-11: Bushland rallied to win the final two sets of a five-set thriller in the Class 2A championship.
Bushland setter Bailey Barron dished out 61 assists, and four different hitters tallied 10 kills or more. Chloe Narrell led the attack with 20 kills, and Brett Zaccardo added 17.
Bushland (38-5) won its third championship in four trips to the state tournament.
Round Top-Carmine d. Windthorst, 25-10, 25-20, 25-23: Round Top-Carmine standouts Megan and Brittany Hohlt were too much for Windthorst in the Class 1A championship.
Megan Hohlt racked up a match-high 25 kills and 13 digs, and Brittany Hohlt added eight kills and 17 assists.
Round Top Carmine (33-12) was playing in its 18th state tournament and won its fourth championship.
