State volleyball tournament roundup: 2A Brock claims its first state title
GARLAND — With seniors Braylee Flaska and Amy Henard igniting a potent offensive attack, Brock won its first volleyball state championship with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-19 victory over Schulenburg in the Class 2A final Saturday at the Curtis Culwell Center.
Flaska had 13 kills and 13 assists, and Henard added 11 kills and 16 assists as Brock won its 20th consecutive match. Brock (45-3) had 41 kills and only 14 attack errors, while Schulenburg (35-10) managed only 27 kills with 16 attack errors.
Brock was making just its second appearance at the state tournament. It lost in the 2A semifinals in 2005.
Abilene Wylie d. La Grange, 3-2: Abilene Wylie won a five-set thriller for the second straight day, edging La Grange, 25-22, 20-25, 25-16, 23-25, 15-12, to claim the 3A state championship.
Abilene Wylie (43-5) was making its third straight appearance at the state tournament. It lost in the semifinals in 2010, then lost to Lovejoy in the 3A final last year.
Layne Little led Abilene Wylie with 23 kills, and Kylie Jenkins had 16. Tucker Smith set up the offense, dishing out 49 assists. Breanna Homer had 26 kills and 33 digs for La Grange (38-5).
Jewett Leon d. Round Top-Carmine, 3-0: Thelma Flores and Morgan Sigford each had a match-high eight kills, and Brianna Sitton chipped in with 23 assists and 12 digs to lead Jewett Leon to a 25-12, 25-14, 25-12 victory over Round Top-Carmine in the Class A state championship match.
Jewett Leon (42-4) won the Class A title after losing in the 2A semifinals each of the last two years. Round Top-Carmine (41-4), trying to win a second state title in three years, had only 22 kills while committing 17 attack errors.
