Softball playoff roundup: Lewisville tops Mansfield; Flower Mound, Forney win series openers

Lewisville scored nine runs in the third inning to rally from an early four-run deficit and beat Mansfield, 13-7, on Thursday in the opening game of a best-of-3 Class 5A second-round playoff series.

Miranda Worthington was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs to pace Lewisville’s nine-hit attack. Lewisville (22-12), the fourth-place team from District 5-5A, also got two RBIs from Gaby Vasquez and Emily Lasky.

Maribeth Gorsuch pitched three effective innings of relief for Lewisville, allowing one run while striking out seven.

In other area-round games:

Class 5A

Flower Mound 16, Belton 2: Flower Mound scored seven runs in the fourth inning and six runs in the fifth to break open a one-run game in Game 1.

Texas Tech signee Ashley Fultz was 2-for-2 and scored four runs for Flower Mound (23-8-1), the state’s ninth-ranked 5A team. Annelise Oswalt pitched a three-hitter and had two RBIs.

Class 4A

Forney 13, Pinkston 0: Allie Miller allowed one hit and struck out 11 in five innings as Forney won Game 1. Forney (25-7) scored 10 runs in the first inning on three hits and nine walks. Louisiana Tech signee Taylor Penn was 2-for-2 with three runs and three RBIs.

Lovejoy 14, Whitehouse 4: Stephen F. Austin signee Brittany Lewis was 4-for-4 with two home runs and was also the winning pitcher as Lovejoy (27-7) won Game 1.

Trophy Club Byron Nelson 7, Burleson 6: Byron Nelson (27-8) scored three runs in the first and four in the third to beat the state’s ninth-ranked 4A team in Game 1. Kenedi Jackson and Dani West each had two hits and scored two runs.

Legacy game suspended: Mansfield Legacy’s series opener against Hallsville was suspended in the top of the third because of inclement weather. The game will resume at 6 p.m. Friday at North Forney, and Game 2 will follow.
