Baseball playoff roundup: McKinney’s Brad Vassar scores winning run on double steal; Rockwall-Heath rolls

McKINNEY — Winning pitcher Brad Vassar scored the winning run on a double steal in the bottom of the fourth inning, helping McKinney squeak out a 6-5 win over District 9-5A top seed Jesuit on Thursday in Game 1 of a best-of-3 Class 5A first-round playoff series.

Vassar had 10 strikeouts, with seven coming in the first three innings. McKinney’s Garrett Dodd was 2-for-3, scored two runs and had an RBI.

A two-run double by Nic Ready capped a five-run top of the fourth that gave Jesuit (24-10-1) a brief 5-3 lead. But McKinney (18-11) answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.


Class 5A

Rockwall-Heath 17, Garland Lakeview 0: Ryan Kinney pitched a five-inning no-hitter and struck out nine to lead Rockwall-Heath (23-9) to a rout in Game 1 of its series.

R.J. Williams was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and three RBIs for the No. 7 team in SportsDay’s 5A area rankings, and Dylan Brown went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple.

Southlake Carroll 10, Arlington Lamar 0: Ben Leeper allowed five hits and struck out 10 while pitching a five-inning shutout as Carroll (27-4-1) won Game 1 of its series.

Kenny Hill was 2-for-2 with two runs and Chris Altimont had three RBIs for a Carroll team that is No. 24 in the national rankings.

Flower Mound 5, Hurst L.D. Bell 1: Seth Jordan (8-0) threw a one-hitter in Game 1 for Flower Mound (31-3), the state’s seventh-ranked 5A team.

W.T. White 3, Allen 1: Jake McKenzie struck out the only batter he faced — which came with two outs and two on in the bottom of the seventh — as W.T. White won the series opener.

Roberto Vasquez, Gustavo Ramos and McKenzie combined to hold Allen to seven hits while striking out seven. Colton Hamilton was 1-for-2 and scored two runs for W.T. White (23-11), and Sam Murchison had an RBI.

Plano West 15, Richardson Berkner 0: Aaron Draper was 2-for-3 with four RBIs for District 10-5A No. 1 seed Plano West in the series opener. Nick Gripp gave up two hits and struck out seven for Plano West (18-11-1), and Kosuke Nishitani had three RBIs.

Grapevine 8, Hebron 1: Cooper Hess (9-1) threw a three-hitter as District 6-5A champion Grapevine (24-8-1) won its series opener. Connor McGuire and Will Jenkins each had two RBIs, and David Fry was 2-for-3 and scored two runs.

Class 4A

McKinney North 6, Mount Pleasant 2: Gabe Constantine (9-1) and Anthony Herrera combined on a four-hitter, with Herrera earning his 11th save, as the state’s eighth-ranked 4A team won Game 1. Preston Speers hit a three-run triple in the first inning for McKinney North (25-1).
