Boys basketball player of the week (1/21): Princeton's David McKinzie

What he did: In two wins this week, McKinzie racked up 52 points. He also had 10 rebounds and 10 steals. He scored 30 points in a win over Melissa on Tuesday, then followed it up with a 22-point performance as Princeton beat Nevada Community, 74-54, on Friday.

Who is he? A 6-1 senior guard.

The stats: McKinzie is averaging 13.3 points, 1.7 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 1.8 steals.

He said it: “I like to score. I really like to score, so I do it. Last year, I looked to scoring first, but now I’ve kind of found a way to get points from rebounds, put-backs, defensive stop skills, in transition and then my shot will eventually come.”

Coach said it: “David, for us, has been a spark of energy here the last couple weeks. For me, a lot of it has come from his activity on the defensive end as far as getting hands on passes and rebounding for us. It kind of got the offense going.” — Jeff Coburn

Did you know? McKinzie is also a wide receiver and a sprinter on the track team. … He also plays the piano and is the senior class president.
