Poteet girls track coach Aaron Ward says district champs should get an area-round bye
The area track meet bit several teams pretty hard last weekend, denying some of the area's top competitors a trip to regionals.
You can read more about those individuals in my story that ran in today's newspaper.
Mesquite Poteet girls track coach Aaron Ward suggested a few changes to the track and field postseason, including an area bye for district champions.
"If you're a district champion, you get a reward in the team sports with a first-round bye," Ward said. "Why not give a relay or individual a chance to forego the area meet and automatically qualify them for the regional?"
Ward's idea seems like a good one if you want to help make sure the best athletes advance to the regional meet - and remain healthy for it.
Poteet had two district champions - seniors Raeghan Shaw and Brooke Bush - who failed to advance to regionals after letdowns in the area meet. Under the previous postseason structure, with no area meet, both would have qualified.
"If you're a district champion, the only benefit is a gold medal," Ward said. "There is no advantage at the area meet. So that's what was disappointing for us. We have two district champions who are sitting at home."
