Duncanville junior guard Ariel Atkins named third-team All-American

Duncanville's Cathy Self-Morgan was named MaxPreps' national Coach of the Year for girls basketball earlier this week. One of her players is also being honored.

Junior Ariel Atkins, a 5-10 guard who is committed to Texas, was named a third-team All-American by MaxPreps. Atkins was SportsDay's Player of the Year after she averaged 16.8 points, 5.3 steals, 6 rebounds and 4.5 assists for the Class 5A state champs.

Atkins, who was a 55.4 percent shooter from the floor and a 49.2 percent shooter from 3-point range, and the Pantherettes will be seeking a third straight state title next season.

Manvel junior post Brianna Turner made MaxPrep's second team. Cibolo Steele guard McKenzie Calvert received honorable mention.
