Wylie East baseball team headed for first playoff berth

In its first varsity season, Wylie East didn't make the playoffs in baseball. In its second season a year ago, Wylie East lost its final three district games and fell short.

This year, Wylie East will not only be in the playoffs, it will have a chance to hang around a while.

The Raiders showed why on Tuesday night as they handed McKinney North its first loss of the season and took over first place in District 13-4A. McKinney North (15-1, 5-1 in 13-4A) is No. 1 in SportsDay's area 4A rankings and Wylie East (15-2-1, 6-0) is No. 2

Wylie East beat McKinney North, 3-2, with the winning run coming on freshman Braden Shewmake's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.

Wylie East junior right-hander Tyler Hughey (3-0) got the win after pitching a scoreless final two innings. Hughey relieved junior Garrett McCain, a lefty who struck out nine in five innings.

McClain in Wylie East's quarterback. Those quarterbacks often are good pitchers, too.
