Southlake Carroll and Flower Mound Marcus series postponed until Saturday
Rain and lightning caused Game 2 of the Class 5A Region I semifinal to be postponed until Saturday, with Flower Mound Marcus leading Southlake Carroll 3-1 in the top of the third inning. Carroll won Game 1, 5-2, on Thursday. If Marcus’ field doesn’t become waterlogged overnight, the game will resume at noon at Marcus. If Marcus’ field is unplayable, the game could be resumed at Dallas Baptist, although that had not be finalized. The time and location of Game 3 is tentatively scheduled for DBU.
The storms interrupted what looked to be an interesting pitching duel between both staffs’ aces: Carroll’s Tyler Alexander and Marcus’ Nick Lewis. Both pitchers had flashes of dominance -- with three strikeouts each – but allowed early runs.
Carroll (33-4-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Chris Altimont lead off the inning with a double, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. He scored on a foul out by Conner Combs, deep enough down the right field line to for Altimont to beat the throw by Trey Mound.
Marcus (32-7) immediately answered in the bottom of the inning. Austyn Laird hit a two-RBI single that nearly glanced off Alexander. The hit scored Logan Sepanek and Brendan Venter, who had both reached on separate errors.
Carroll coach Larry Hughes said he was doubtful that Alexander – a TCU signee who headed into the game at 12-0 with a 0.65 ERA and 161 strikeouts – would be able to resume pitchingon Saturday.
“That’s why these things screw up your pitching sometimes,” Hughes said.
