Football: Pilot Point bounces back against Boyd
PILOT POINT - Prior to the start of Friday's game, the Pilot Point team ran through a banner that read, "We've got a feeling… tonight's going to be a good night."
The Bearcats sent the home crowd away feeling satisfied, as the Bearcats defeated Boyd 57-26 at Massey Stadium.
The victory was crucial for the defending Class 2A state champions, as it came into Friday's night matchup having lost its last two contests to Fort Worth Nolan and Celina.
"We needed a win desperately before going into district play," Pilot Point head coach Blake Feldt said. "It was good to get a good victory tonight, there's no doubt about it."
The Bearcats (2-3) were led by quarterback J.P. Price, who tormented the Boyd (1-4) defense with his arm and feet. Price completed 22 of 27 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns. He also scampered for 192 yards on just 17 carries, scoring two additional touchdowns on the ground.
Pilot Point came out strong to start the game, scoring the first 14 points. In addition to Price's stellar effort, running back Mason Guthrie had a phenomenal performance.
The senior rushed for 61 yards on 10 attempts and two touchdowns, in addition to five catches for 101 yards and two touchdown receptions.
One of those rushing scores came after Guthrie intercepted a pass by Boyd quarterback Jared Cate. Eleven seconds later, Guthrie carried the ball 33 yards for a touchdown, helping the Bearcats pull away early in the fourth quarter.
Wide receiver Austin Balderas had significant contributions on both sides of the ball as well, as he hauled in six catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns, one of which was set up by an interception of his own. Both Guthrie and Balderas played integral roles in the Pilot Point's last game before its open week.
"We're seniors so we really need to step it up, and we know we need to have a great season," Balderas said.
Cate struggled mightily against the defense of the Bearcats. He went 9-for-16 for 137 yards and three interceptions. Running back Colton Lyon was a bright spot for the Yellow Jackets despite missing a short amount of time in the third quarter because of an injury.
Lyon carried the ball 12 times for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Lyon had one passing attempt in the game, but it was very significant, finding Abram Moreno for a 19-yard touchdown reception.
Pilot Point played its best in the second half, outscoring Boyd 28-14 in the final two quarters. The Bearcats will try to carry the momentum into District 10-3A play, when it will face Sanger on Oct. 8.
"What we're really trying to do is get prepared for district," Price said. "I think with this win we really showed what we can do, and we got to work really hard to come out and be successful in district."
