Mansfield 42, Mansfield Timberview 23
MANSFIELD - Apparently, Damon Bullock can do it all.
The Mansfield back ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns, threw a 29-yard halfback pass for a touchdown and intercepted a pass late in the first half to give Mansfield the boost and the 42-23 win over Timberview Friday night at Newsom Stadium.
Bullock started off the night on the right foot, scoring on an 8-yard run on Mansfield's first possession. The Tigers went 62 yards on 12 plays, including a fourth down conversion, to take a 7-0 late in the first quarter. He also had a hand in the next Mansfield (4-0, 1-0) touchdown, taking a toss, then looking downfield to find a wide open Julio Quintana for a 29-yard score.
On the ensuing Timberview (0-4, 0-1) possession, a fumble put the Wolves in a deep hole. Just three plays after Quintana's touchdown reception, Jeremy Akomeah caught the midair fumble and returned it 36 yards for the score, giving Mansfield a 20-0 lead midway through the second stanza.
The first half ended in a flurry, as both teams scored in the final 22 seconds of play.
Bullock's interception and return put Mansfield deep in Timberview territory. Jerod Evans and Gary Davis hooked up on a six-yard touchdown pitch and catch, as Evans caught the wide open look in the end zone to give Mansfield a 28-0 lead with mere seconds left.
Timberview's next possession put the Wolves on the board in only three plays. Driving 56 yards on three passes, the drive was capped off when Chaz Sampson took an 11-yard pass in the corner of the end zone to make it 28-7 at the half.
The second half featured Mansfield playing keep away from the Wolves for the majority of the two quarters. Mansfield took the ball on turnover on downs in the final three minutes of the third quarter, and Bullock scored in the final minute on a 17-yard run to give Mansfield a 35-7 lead going into the final quarter.
The Wolves couldn't handle the kickoff, and Mansfield recovered on the Timberview 36 yard line. Mansfield proceeded to use the next six minutes of game clock to drive the remaining 36 yards and score, making it 42-7 thanks to an Evans one-yard run.
Timberview was able to score twice in the final six minutes, first on Sampson's second touchdown reception of the night, and then on Brandon Scott's 26-yard catch in the end zone. Mansfield's George Baltimore stepped out of the back of the end zone to give Timberview a two-point bump late in the game.
