Irving Nimitz 49, Irving 14
IRVING - Irving Nimitz scored four first-quarter touchdowns on its way to a 49-14 victory over Irving on Friday night to clinch a District 6-5A playoff berth.
Nimitz, which broke a six-year playoff drought by qualifying last season, will meet District 5-5A Division I top seed Duncanville on Friday at a site to be determined.
Receiver J.J. Gaines took a swing pass from Adam Charles 72 yards for a touchdown on Nimitz's first play. On the fourth play of Nimitz's second series, Gaines, covered by two defenders, leaped for another pass and raced 46 yards to score.
Nimitz (6-4, 4-4) took a 21-0 lead on a 29-yard fumble return by defensive back Shane Taylor, who picked up a fumble in midair after a botched punt snap. Nimitz built its lead to 28-0 when Glenn McQuinney broke free on an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Gaines finished with three touchdowns on four receptions for 143 yards. Charles threw for four touchdowns while completing 9-of-11 passes for 208 yards.
After stopping a 13-game losing streak last week, Irving (1-9, 1-6) got on the board in the second half as sophomore running back Justin Moore scored two touchdowns and finished with 130 yards on the night.
