SPC cross country roundup: St. Mark's cliams title; Hockaday outlasts Trinity Valley
FORT WORTH — The St. Mark’s boys volleyball team didn’t make it easy on itself but managed to defend its Southwest Preparatory Conference title by defeating Oklahoma City Casady, 25-19, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, on Saturday.
St. Mark’s (26-1) has now won the conference title three of the last five years, while finishing as the runner-up in 2010 and 2011.
The St. Mark’s charge was led by Timothy Simenc with 11 kills and three blocks. Parker Dixon and Teddy Edwards each contributed five kills. Casady (20-6) was led by Patrick Loeffler with eight kills.
In the fourth set, Casady built a 14-11 advantage. St. Mark’s, with help from Dixon and Tabish Dayani, responded with a 7-1 scoring spurt to take an 18-15 lead.
Tied at 21 late in the set, St. Mark’s scored the final four points behind a Simenc kill, a Blake Spangler ace and a Dixon-Dayani block.
Hockaday outlasts Trinity Valley
ockaday claimed third place with a 1-0 shootout victory over Fort Worth Trinity Valley in the SPC Division I field hockey tournament.
The teams were scoreless through two overtimes before Hockaday won, 3-1, in the shootout. Gretchen O’Brien gave Hockaday (11-4-3) a 1-0 lead after the first round, and after Trinity Valley tied it at one apiece in the third round, Hockaday’s Evie Pena scored to open the fourth round and Cate O’Brien scored the game-clincher to begin the fifth round.
In the championship match, Oklahoma City Casady made an early second-period goal stand up for a 1-0 win over Fort Worth Country Day.
Strong showing by area runners
t. Mark’s had three runners finish in the top 10 as it won the boys team championship in cross country. Matthew Brown placed sixth, JT Graass was seventh and Nick Buckenham took ninth as St. Mark’s beat runner-up Houston St. John’s by 19 points.
Episcopal School of Dallas’ Lili Clark finished second in the girls race.
