Prestonwood girls hold off John Paul II; one win from TAPPS title
MANSFIELD -- Prestonwood moved onto the TAPPS 5A championship game on Friday night, surviving a wild fourth quarter rally by John Paul II to claim a 45-34 victory at Mansfield Timberview.
Prestonwood led by as much as 12 in the second half, but saw John Paul II rally to within one point at 35-34 with two minutes to play.
However, John Paul II was twice denied chances at go-ahead baskets and Prestonwood put the game away by hitting 10-of-13 foul shots down the stretch.
“We knew this was going to be a tough game, it’s always tough when you play John Paul II,” said Prestonwood coach Sherry Ollison. “Our defense came up with big stops in the fourth quarter, and we shot our free throws well when it mattered.”
Prestonwood’s Alicia Blackwell was 5-of-6 from the line in the fourth quarter, while Sabrina Muenster and Brooke Alexander added two free throws apiece in the final minute.
Blackwell finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, with Marina Muenster adding 10 points and 11 rebounds.
John Paul II, the defending TAPPS 5A champs, were led by Arabella DeAngelis with 10 points, nine points from Kayla Bise and a seven-point, 11-rebound effot by Brittney Smith.
