Girls 3A/Others playoff roundup: Early burst carries Argyle to region final; Triple A Academy falls
COMMERCE — Argyle coach Skip Townsend asked his team for a quick start against Canton on Friday night.
He certainly got what he was looking for.
Argyle ended Canton’s season and cemented a matchup against one of Argyle’s biggest rivals for a trip to the Class 3A state tournament.
Argyle overwhelmed Canton, 52-26, in the Class 3A Region II semifinal on Friday night at Texas A&M-Commerce’s Field House. Argyle (34-1) faces District 10-3A rival Celina in the Region II final at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Argyle finished the season ranked second in 3A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, while Celina was ranked fourth. Argyle won both contests between the teams this season.
For the fourth straight playoff game, Argyle won comfortably by double-digits, largely because of the team’s torrid start.
Argyle freshman Vivian Gray led all scorers with 19 points, while junior Delaney Sain scored 12. Argyle knocked down seven of 10 shots in the opening quarter, as Sain and Gray combined for 11 points. Argyle took a 28-7 lead into halftime.
Sunnyvale 55, Winnsboro 43 (OT): The state’s top-ranked Class 2A team rallied from a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit, then outscored Winnsboro, 13-1, in overtime.
Sunnyvale (34-0) reached a regional final for the first time and will play in the 2A Region II championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tarleton State. Bria Johnson and Sheridan Lewis scored 14 points apiece to pace Sunnyvale’s offense.
Windthorst 51, Triple A Academy 50: Carli Clifton hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Windthorst the victory in a Class A Division I Region II semifinal. Triple A was a state semifinalist last season.
