High school hoops preview: Duncanville, Cy Falls clash in girls 5A semifinals
District: 5-5A (first)
Coach: Cathy Self-Morgan
State titles: six ('76, '88, '89, '90, '97, '03)
Previous state appearances (last): 21 (2004)
Top players: Gs Empress Davenport (Texas signee), Tasia Foman and Morgan Bolton all average more than 10 points per game. So do Ariel Atkins and Kiara Perry, a pair of guard/forwards who do the bulk of the rebounding. Atkins (5-10) and Perry (5-11) each average seven rebounds per game.
Analysis : Duncanville doesn't have a lot of size, but its quickness and aggressiveness helps the Pantherettes rebound well. Duncanville, which suffered its only loss to Plano West in the first week of December, beat Cy Falls, 58-47, in the Pasadena Texas Invitational in November. Duncanville's depth makes it the favorite to win the 5A title.
District: 17-5A (first)
Coach: Jim Stephens
State titles: none
Previous state appearances: None
Playoff victories : 77-27 over Alief Taylor, 70-48 over Katy Taylor, 60-33 over Cy Ranch, 50-27 over Galena Park North Shore, 59-52 over Alief Elsik.
Top players: Despite having a pair of 6-2 post players, Cy Falls is guard-oriented like Duncanville. Loryn Goodwin (North Texas signee), a 5-9 guard who averaged nearly 19 points in the regular season, leads Cy Falls in scoring, rebounding and 3-point shooting. Gs Shernise Robertson and Kit Metoyer are also double-figure scorers.
Analysis: Cy Falls has several players who can have big nights, but the team's leader is Goodwin, who transferred from Temple before her senior year. How well Cy Falls handles Duncanville's pressure defense will be key in the semifinal.
