Football: Argyle whips Gilmer to move on in playoffs
ENNIS -- Argyle head coach Todd Rodgers is used to watching his outstanding junior quarterback, Austin Aune, make plays with his arm, not his feet.
But it was Aune's feet that made the difference as Argyle defeated Gilmer, 41-14, in a Class 3A Division II Region II semifinal clash on Saturday at Lion Stadium.
Argyle advances to meet Carthage in the Region II final at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Tyler. Carthage defeated Dallas Madison 42-13 on Friday night.
"That's something that hasn't had to happen all year," Rodgers said about Aune scrambling for his life for much of the first half against a furious Gilmer rush.
"We knew their athleticism on their defensive line was going to be a huge factor," Rodgers said. "They were fortunate enough to get through the line of scrimmage a couple of times and put some pressure on the quarterback."
Despite the pressure, Gilmer was unable to sack Aune even once.
He seemed to feel the rush and step just the right direction every time, and got plenty of help from his receivers.
"He did a fabulous job of scrambling," Rodgers said. "The receivers worked to the open spots and he was able to get the ball to them. That was a big plus."
Leading only 3-0 after trips into the red zone on each of its first two possessions, Argyle was backed up to its own 10 following a 40-yard Gilmer punt.
On third-and-six from the 14, Aune scrambled right to avoid one tackler, then sprinted into the open on the left to buy time for his receivers.
That gave Justin Hommel just enough time to break free behind the Gilmer secondary, where Aune found him in stride about 40 yards downfield.
Hommel made the catch and outraced a lone defender for an 84-yard touchdown that made it 10-0 Argyle with 8:10 left in the first half.
Aune's feet came into play again as Argyle took command with a 21-point third quarter.
His second touchdown pass of the game -- a 3-yarder to Chadd Bossow -- lifted Argyle to a 20-0 advantage before Gilmer finally got on the board with a 14-yard scoring strike from Luke Turner to Wes Johnson.
Gilmer tried to seize the momentum with an onside kick, but Christian Pucciarello recovered for Argyle at its own 49.
Two plays later, Aune broke free down the right sideline for 44 yards to the Gilmer 6. That led to a 3-yard touchdown run by Layton Lowry.
It was the first of two touchdown runs by Lowry, who led all rushers with 159 yards on 16 carries.
Most of that yardage came on his second scoring run, the last of Argyle's three third-quarter scores.
Starting deep in its own territory after Patrick Vickery broke up Turner's fourth-and-goal pass attempt from the 5-yard line, Argyle called two straight running plays to Lowry.
The first netted 2 yards. The second went for 93 yards and a touchdown as time expired in the third quarter.
A 2-yard touchdown run by Turner and an onside kick recovery put Gilmer at midfield with almost 10 minutes to play, trailing 34-14 but still with at least an outside shot at a comeback.
That was before Turner was separated from the ball on a vicious hit after running 4 yards for a first down. Tyler Luce picked up the loose ball for Argyle and returned it 60 yards for the game's final score.
Aune finished 15-of-26 for 302 yards and two scores. Bossow had six receptions for 123 yards and Hommel added three for 109. Ian Sadler had five receptions for 79 yards and also completed a halfback pass for 20 yards.
While Gilmer was unable to touch Aune, Argyle sacked Turner twice -- one by Luce, the other by Sam Sizelove.
Sizelove also had a fumble recovery, and Storm Griffin had two pass interceptions, the first of which came in the end zone to preserve what was then a precarious 3-0 Argyle lead late in the first quarter.
