Frisco Liberty 34, Royse City 24
ROYCE CITY - Quarterback Zack Smith accounted for 254 yards and three touchdowns as Frisco Liberty held on for a 34-24 victory over Royce City at Royce City ISD Stadium.
Liberty (3-0), No. 5 in SportsDay's area Class 4A rankings, entered the game averaging just under 400 rushing yards per game and 57.5 points per game. But the Royce City defense focused on running back Jay Ajayi, a Boise St. signee, and forced Liberty to throw the ball. Smith responded with 215 yards in the air and threw back-to-back scoring passes to Cameron Brown covering 22 and 36 yards to open up a 31-3 halftime lead. Smith added 39 yards on the ground with a 29-yard touchdown run preceding the scoring passes to Brown.
Ajayi still managed 157 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. His 11 rushing touchdowns are tops among area Class 4A running backs. Kicker Connor Hirt contributed two field goals of 43 and 31 yards while perfectly executing three onside kicks for Liberty.
Royce City (0-4) then put together a furious second half comeback with 21 straight points behind the arm and legs of quarterback Taylor Corbin. Corbin finished 20-of-31 passing for 310 yards and a pair of touchdowns to go along with a 10-yard scoring run to open the 3rd quarter. Junior receiver Torrell McQueen finished with seven catches for 112 yards and a touchdown.
