Football: Broncos ousted by Hereford
SWEETWATER -- Overcoming obstacles all season, the Denton Broncos couldn't overcome another one on Saturday afternoon at the Mustang Bowl.
Having exceeded expectations in 2010, the Broncos' dream season came to a halt in a 41-21 loss to Hereford in a Class 4A Region I bi-district playoff game.
Denton (4-7), which had won just two games the past three seasons, put up a fight in its first playoff game since 2002. Just 30 seconds into the third quarter, the Broncos were within six points after a Dentton Hudspeth 32-yard touchdown run.
"No one thought we would be here, but these kids kept fighting and working all year," Denton head coach Randy Patzkowski said. "These kids are hungry and know what it feels like now. They have a lot of fight and want it, and we will be back."
After climbing to within six points, the Broncos couldn't find an answer for Hereford quarterback Ryan Martinez. The Whitefaces (8-3) spread the field and used Martinez on the ground in the second half, as he finished with 163 yards on 12 carries and one score.
"We made some adjustments at halftime and got that score, but we couldn't find an answer for [Martinez]," Patzkowski said. "They just kept running him around the edge and spread us out, and we couldn't stop it."
After Denton got to within six, the Whitefaces scored three consecutive times to open a 41-14 lead. Denton got the game's last score on a 10-yard pass from Hudspeth to Isaac Johnson.
Denton amassed 371 yards on Hereford, the District 3-4A tri-champion, including 275 on the ground. Hudspeth, a junior, ran for 172 yards on 23 carries and two scores and added 96 yards through the air.
Hereford finished the afternoon with 454 yards -- 312 of those coming on 38 rushing attempts.
Martinez scored on a 39-yard run to make it 20-7 and then the lead increased to 27-7 on a 1-yard run by Marshall San Miguel. Denton answered back to get within 13 on a 28-yard Hudspeth run.
An 11-yard pass from Martinez to Daymien Garcia and a 1-yard run by Derek Zamora rounded out the scoring.
The game might have been different if not for two plays that both went against Denton. The Broncos gave up a 64-yard pass on the game's first play. Then, down 7-0, they appeared to have recovered a fumble in the end zone, but the officials ruled the Hereford ball carrier was down.
Denton also was hurt by an inability to score from the Hereford 10-yard line with first-and-goal just before the half.
"Denton is a good team. Coach Patz has done a tremendous job of turning that program around," Hereford head coach Don DeLozier said. "They did some things well, but we were able to take advantage of some things they gave us there in the second half. We try to adjust and do whatever the other team is giving us, and they weren't able to stop the run."
