Staying on track
Guyer boys edge Boyd, Argyle in home meet
Entering the final event, known as the main event of track, the 4x400-meter relay, the boys team title at the Guyer Wildcat Relays was wide open for the taking.
Guyer, Argyle and McKinney Boyd were all separated by just six points heading into the marquee event.
Guyer had 120 total points, two ahead of Argyle, and Boyd was in third place with 114. The Wildcats did just enough to win the meet for the fifth straight year, continuing Guyer’s streak of winning its meet in both the boys and girls divisions.
The Wildcats led the entire race in the mile relay until anchor Ashar Butt was passed at the 200-meter mark of the final leg by Boyd’s Aaron Allen and couldn’t hold him off, giving Guyer second place in the race and the meet title by two points over Boyd with a winning score of 136. Argyle finished third with 122 points.
Butt was the lead leg in both the 4x100 relay and the 4x200 relay, both of which Guyer won, and boys coach Oschlor Flemming said he just ran out of gas in the end.“It was a quick night with him running all three relays,” Flemming said. “He’s not typically the anchor. Conner [Crane] is usually the anchor leg. He had hamstring issues, and I’d be stupid to lose him tonight and not have him for district.”
The brightest star for the Wildcats was Kristian Dillard, who won the 100 in a time of 10.92 seconds and doubled up by winning the 200 in a tie in 21.93 seconds. He also anchored the Wildcats’ 4x200 relay team to victory in 1:28.71.
Argyle finished in fifth place in the mile relay to put drop it from second to third place in the team standings, but head coach Steve Chancelor was still happy with his team’s finish against a field of 4A and 5A teams.
“We really like to go against the bigger schools, that way when we go against 3A schools, it’s like lifting heavyweights and all of a sudden going to some flyweights, and it’s easy,” Chancelor said. “Our goal at this time of the year is just to stay healthy and compete at a high level, and we want to keep getting faster.”
Long known for their distance runners, the Eagles were no different on Thursday, as Texas A&M signee Jake Roberts ran a 1:55.17 in the 800 to win. He also won the 1,600 in 4:26.00 and anchored the mile relay immediately after the mile.
As usual, the Guyer girls rolled to victory, winning by 55 points over Keller Timber Creek with a score of 195.
The Lady Wildcats were led by Rachel Badiru, who hasn’t lost a hurdles race all year and continued the trend on Thursday. She won the 100 hurdles over Argyle’s Jessie Johnson in 15.56 seconds and the 300 hurdles by two seconds in 47.68 before anchoring the Guyer mile relay team to victory in 4:03.10.
Guyer also got a huge boost from its field events early in the day by winning the discus (Sydney Chavez) and the shot put (Nia Noble). Guyer had two athletes tie for first in the high jump in Danielle Stautner and Joanna Huckabee (5-0), and teammate Austin Peterie jumped 4-10 to finish third.
“Our field events were great,” girls coach Carl Melson said. “I mean gosh, we came out of the field events with 60 or 70 points and people have to catch us. It makes it nice.”
