Kimball trio of D'Angelo Allen, Jawun Evans, Trent Brinkley overmatch Mansfield Summit
GARLAND – Perennial state tournament qualifier Kimball (23-7) advanced with its high-scoring trio of Jawun Evans, Trent Brinkley and D’Angelo Allen to a Class 4A Region II regional semifinal over Summit. Kimball meets Lancaster at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Culwell Center in the regional final.
For the sixth-consecutive season, either Kimball or Lancaster will earn the Region II state tournament berth. Kimball has won state titles in 2011 and 2012, reached the state final last year before losing to Rosenberg Terry and reached the state tournament in 2009. Lancaster reached the state final in 2010 against Houston Yates. Lancaster defeated Kimball, 77-70, in December’s DISD Coca-Cola Tournament.
Kimball took control early over Summit with a five-point first-quarter lead and a 36-26 halftime lead. Midway through the third quarter, Kimball lead 48-33 with Evans, Brinkley and Allen all in double figures. Summit rallied to 48-40 with 2:37 left in the third quarter but Kimball called timeout, got a basket by Evans, a steal and layup by Brinkley to lead 52-40 in the next 30 seconds.
Summit, qualifying for its first regional since 2007, made a late run to pull within 60-53 with 1:50 left but Kimball hit free throws down the stretch. Kimball coach Royce Johnson said he was also changing some lineup rotations with the recent loss of several players to academics.
“We shook things up a little but I think I have better understanding for the final,” Johnson said. “We knew Summit could shoot and they did. We started out a little nerves. That’s a problem with the second game. When you watch an exciting game like the first one (Lancaster over South Oak Cliff), the players start out a little too excited.”
With multiple dunks off transition baskets, the 6-6 Brinkley had a game-high 24 points. A nationally recruited transfer from South Carolina last summer, Evans (17 points) has emerged as a ball-handling wizard who can score. The 6-7 Allen, who teamed with Brinkley to control the boards, also ended with 15 points.
