Defense carries Flower Mound Marcus over Northwest, 51-39

Flower Mound Marcus 51, Justin Northwest 39: Defending Class 5A state champion Flower Mound Marcus used its tenacious man-to-man defense to beat Justin Northwest before a crowd of 1,900 at Lewisville Arena.

Marcus (33-2) finally pulled to a double-digit lead late in the fourth quarter by relying primarily on offensive rebounds for baskets. New Mexico signee Nick Banyard led Marcus with 14 points, while Oklahoma State signee Marcus Smart had 11 points. Oklahoma State signee Phillip Forte III scored nine points, all in the second half.

Smart typified the aggressive, defensive style with eight steals and four blocked shots.

Northwest (22-12) stayed within 34-27 to start the fourth quarter with 6-7 post junior Todd Christensen getting 12 tough inside points. Senior guards Orlando Byrd and Peri James combined for 15 points.
