Unfortunately for the Lady Chaparrals, that's exactly what they were trying to avoid.
Just three days after watching a double-digit lead evaporate in its first loss of the year, a turnover-plagued Aubrey team suffered a 55-34 loss to Frisco Liberty at home.
"We just got tired," Lady Chaparrals head coach Bobby Stastny said. "We haven't played a defense like that. They just kept coming at us and putting pressure on us. It's something we have to get used to."
Aubrey (2-2) started the season off strong with back-to-back blowout wins over Carrolton Ranchview and Texoma Christian. Everything seemed to be going well until the Lady Chaparrals watched a 13-point lead disappear on Friday in a loss to Decatur.
Against Liberty (6-2), they never had a lead to lose.
After a tough first quarter that left Aubrey trailing by just four points, the Lady Redhawks took over the game using a strong inside game and a tenacious pressure defense. Liberty outscored Aubrey 17-4 in the second quarter alone on the way to building a 17-point halftime lead.
The Lady Chaparrals struggled mightily against Liberty's press and turned the ball over 30 times.
"They're just a good team," Stastny said. "They're experienced and they had us outmanned. We got tired and, when that happens and you start missing shots against a pressure defense like that it isn't a good thing."
Aubrey managed to keep the second half closer, but never got any closer than 15 points and failed to gain any sort of momentum until late in the fourth quarter when it forced five straight Liberty turnovers en route to scoring the final six points of the game.
By then, it was too late.
Stastny blamed Aubrey's struggles on its sluggish performance on the defensive end of the floor.
"They play good man-to-man, and we're still learning to play the trap defense," Stastny said.
"They caught us out of position, and we had a couple out there not hustling. When you play the trap defense, you've got to hustle."
Despite the loss, Presley Stastny had a game-high 20 points and was just one of five Aubrey players to post points in the game.
Sidney Shelstead, Kaitlyn Brown and Schyler Nelson each had four points, while Kenzie Taylor had two.
Liberty, meanwhile, was led by Emily Mital's 11 points and got at least four points from eight of its 13 players.
