Girls basketball: Lady Warriors shut down Ryan
ARGYLE -- Coming into its matchup against Ryan, Liberty Christian hadn't played a game in six days. The last time it marched on to the court, the Lady Warriors were humbled by Lewisville in their second loss of the year.
But none of that mattered on Friday night, when Liberty stormed past Ryan, 59-40.
Summer Fife led the way for Liberty, scoring a game-high 23 points in the victory. Fife scored 17 of those points in the middle two periods of the game, helping the Lady Warriors (15-2) put the game out of reach.
"She's been consistent all year," Liberty head coach Ken Burroughs said. "She's managed to step her game up another level, and she's done that pretty much every game we've played this year on all parts of the floor."
Nicole Kornet was the other player for the Lady Warriors to score in double figures, netting 21 points. The duo of Fife and Kornet outscored the entire Ryan squad with a combined 44 points. The rest of the Lady Warriors collectively scored 19.
"Defensively, we didn't do our job," Ryan head coach Monesha Allen said. "Liberty was able to score in transition. Obviously, we knew they would be able to post up [Kornet] on anybody we had. But you have to be able to front her and have backside help."
Ryan point guard Teana Ogden was medically cleared to play before tip-off, and was able to lead the Lady Raiders with 18 points. Ogden, the 5-4A newcomer of the year last season, scored nine of those points in the fourth quarter, when the game was already out of reach for Ryan (6-9).
"We just weren't ready," Allen said. "We came out here, and we were a little frazzled without our point guard. We didn't think she was going be able to step up and play today, but she was, and you would think that would be more of a reason to be ready to go."
After leading 36-21 at halftime, Liberty stepped on Ryan's throat from the start of the second half, scoring 14 straight points. A three-point bucket by Ogden with 2:13 to go in the third quarter ended Liberty's run.
The Lady Warriors' defense suffocated the Lady Raiders, enabling Liberty to outscore Ryan 17-5 in the frame.
"I didn't think we had an effort for four quarters," Allen said. "It was spurts of efforts. You have to have 32 minutes of all-out effort in order to play with the good teams."
