Football: Metzler leads Liberty Christian over John Paul
ARGYLE - Brett Metzler scored four touchdowns and had a big night both rushing and receiving to lead Liberty Christian to a 48-21 win over Plano John Paul II.
The ground game was effective for the Warriors (6-2, 3-2) as they ran for 386 yards on 37 carries to grind out a win over the Cardinals (3-5, 0-4). That included Metzler's 117 yards on the ground, while Jared Lawson also broke the century mark with 133 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 10 carries.
Liberty Christian scored first after Miles Smith blocked a punt and took over at the John Paul II 4-yard-line. Three plays later, Metzler ran a draw into the end zone from the 9-yard-line for his first touchdown of the night.
Following a 60-yard punt return from Daniel Loch on a reverse on the ensuing punt, Liberty started with excellent field position again, this time at the John Paul II 25-yard-line. This time Metzler sprinted through the middle for a 19-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 14-0.
However, miscues proved costly for the Warriors in the first half as Liberty Christian turned the ball over four times. They also had a total of eleven penalties for 79 yards in the first half alone and allowed John Paul II to hang in the game early on. The Warriors fumbled on three consecutive possessions to give the Cardinals good field position on two occasions in the second quarter. Quarterback Josh Cousins fumbled an option pitch to Lawson at the end of the first quarter and the Cardinals recovered at the Liberty 31-yard-line.
Three plays later John Paul II quarterback Christian Boese found Ryan Cook in the corner of the end zone for a 9-yard touchdown pass.
Lawson then fumbled on Liberty's next possession and the Cardinals again took over in Liberty territory, this time at the 22-yard-line. Boese connected with Cameron Meziere for 25 yards soon after to put John Paul II at the 2-yard-line. Two plays later, Chase Cantu dove in from one yard out to tie the score at 14.
"We committed too many penalties and too many turnovers," said Liberty Christian head coach Greg Price. "We gave them a short field and they got two touchdowns out of the deal. We've got to eliminate turnovers because that's been our biggest problem the last few weeks."
But Liberty was able to answer with 21 consecutive points to close out the first half and take a 35-14 halftime lead.
With 6:09 left in the first half Liberty went back on top when Jared Lawson took a handoff on the first play of a possession and raced untouched for a 66-yard touchdown run. Lawson added a 34-yard touchdown run two possessions later and, following a John Paul II three-and-out, Cousins found Metzler on a 62-yard touchdown pass down the sideline just 46 seconds later.
Liberty put the game away early in the second half by scoring two more touchdowns and extending the lead to 48-14. The first touchdown of the second half came when Metzler scored his fourth touchdown on the night on a 35-yard run. The Warriors final touchdown occurred when linebacker JonAaron Howell picked off a Boese pass and raced 78 yards for a touchdown.
John Paul II scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to cut into the lead, but it wasn't enough for the Cardinals and the Warriors coasted to victory. Boese led the Cardinal offense by completing 24 of 56 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns.
