Football: Argyle beats Sanger, takes district crown
SANGER - With Argyle and Sanger already in the playoffs, the only things left to decide was who would take home the District 9-3A title.
It took a while to figure that one out, but Argyle continued its perfect regular season reign.
The Eagles were on the ropes most of the evening but, behind a stellar rushing effort by Layton Lowry and some key defensive plays in the fourth quarter, the Eagles outlasted Sanger, 56-45, to claim the district championship on Friday night.
Argyle (10-0, 5-0) polished off its second straight perfect regular season with the victory. The Eagles have not lost a regular season game since their loss to Celina at the end of 2008. They will start the Class 3A Division II playoffs next week with bi-district play against Anna, who lost to Van Alstyne in its District 10-3A finale 28-10 on Friday.
The Eagles needed everything they had to defeat Sanger (9-1, 4-1), which was seeking its own perfect season and district title. At one point the Indians were up 24-7 in the second quarter.
But that was before Lowry asserted himself.
Lowry finished the game with a whopping 293 yards rushing and four touchdowns - the first of which came with 6:00 remaining in the second quarter on a 4-yard score just few plays after Sanger tried to put the game away with an onside kick.
That decision may have kept Argyle in the game even though the Indians remained in the lead and pushed it to 31-21 early in the third quarter after 19-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dane Evans to Jonathan Garza.
But Lowry was relentless. His rushing helped set up Austin Aune's only touchdown pass of the night - a 28-yarder to Adam Khan with 6:15 left in the third quarter that cut Sanger's lead to 31-28. Argyle's next drive started on its own 11 after Sanger pinned it on a punt. Despite facing its worst position of the night, Lowry broke the game open for Argyle after breaking up the middle of the Indian defense for an 89-yard touchdown run with 1:01 left in the third quarter.
By then, the game was already a track meet. Evans was racking up massive numbers for the Indians and finished with 496 yards passing. Nathan Rotter set up a touchdown and scored two others and finished with eight receptions for 233 yards. Garza, who stepped up in the second half, scored twice and caught five passes for 124 yards. His 74-yard score up the middle of a weary Eagles defense with 4:56 left in the game gave the Indians the lead for the last time, 45-42.
Argyle didn't need much time to regain the lead against a tired Indian defense. Lowry set up the Eagles with a 29-yard run to the Indian 5, where Nick Chrestopoulos finished off the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with just 3:14 left. Lowry nearly fumbled the game away as he fell to the ground, but recovered it despite a sea of Indians headed toward him.
Down 49-45, Sanger still had a shot to win, but Evans' near-perfect night came to an end. His interception to Argyle's Patrick Vickery ended one drive. After the Eagles were unable to score, they punted and pinned the Indians back at their own 5. On the first play, Argyle's Antonio Griffin picked off Evans' pass for the game's final score.
Despite the loss, Sanger will face Celina in a Class 3A Division I bi-district playoff game on Friday at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex.
