Football: Argyle shuts out Pilot Point, clinches playoff berth
ARGYLE -- The Argyle defense came into Friday's game hailed as one of the top defenses in Class 3A, giving up an average of 11 points and 245.5 yards per game.
The Eagles lived up to that billing in a 31-0 win over Pilot Point. And with the win, the Eagles (9-0, 4-0) clinched a berth in the playoffs.
Pilot Point opened the game with an onside kick and recovered it at the Argyle 44, but the opening drive stalled and ended with a missed field goal. That was a theme for the Pilot Point offense most of the night, as the stingy Argyle defense held the Bearcats in check.
"This is really the first passing game we've had to face in district play, so I was very pleased with the new game plans," said Argyle head coach Todd Rodgers. "To prepare for a team that throws the ball as much as Pilot Point and then for them to change to a running attack, I thought our kids made a really good transition and adapted to our changes as the game progressed."
The change of game plan occurred for Pilot Point because of a hamstring injury to quarterback and leading rusher J.P. Price. Pilot Point (3-6, 1-3) was forced to use wide receiver Austin Balderas at quarterback.
With the Pilot Point loss and an Aubrey loss to Whitesboro on Friday night, the Bearcats were eliminated from playoff contention.
On Argyle's second possession, the Eagles took over in Pilot Point territory at the 30-yard line following a 17-yard punt return from Storm Griffin. Five plays later, Austin Aune scrambled out of the pocket and found Chadd Bossow for a 5-yard touchdown pass.
Early in the second quarter, on its third possession, Argyle took over at the Pilot Point 44-yard line following a 14-yard punt return. On the first play of the possession, Layton Lowry ran for 25 yards to the 19-yard line. Then, on a fourth-and-1 from the 10, Lowry converted with a 4-yard run. The Eagles pushed the lead to 14-0 when Lowry bulldozed his way into the end zone from the 6-yard line.
Balderas, who hadn't taken a single snap at quarterback all season, was fairly effective and Pilot Point ate up a lot of clock in the first half, keeping the ball on the ground for the most part. But the Bearcats were unable to put any points on the scoreboard, and despite being in Argyle territory for 20 plays in the first half, the Bearcats accumulated zero points from those opportunities.
"We had a hard time getting things going and getting some things executed, and Argyle had a lot to do with that," said Pilot Point head coach Blake Feldt. "They've got a great football team and they've got a great defense and they made it hard on us."
Argyle put together an impressive seven-play, 63-yard drive on its first possession of the second half. Aune found Bossow for a 31-yard gain to put the ball in the red zone. Lowry, who ran for 88 yards on 18 carries, capped off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run three plays later.
Nick Chrestopoulos ran in a 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to push the lead to 28-0 and put the game away. Chad Hedlund added a 30-yard field goal to make the final score 31-0.
With the win, the Eagles remained on a collision course with Sanger for the District 9-3A championship. The two teams will meet in Sanger next Friday with identical 9-0 records.
"The Sanger game's going to be a big game," said Rodgers. "You're going to have two 9-0 teams potentially facing each other up in Sanger. It ought to be a great battle and one of the more high-profile games in the North Texas area."
