Volleyball roundup: Bishop Lynch, Ursuline reach TAPPS final
CORSICANA — The sophomore trio of Catherine Balido, Francesca Goncalves and Shalom Ifeanyichukwu combined for 21 kills and six blocks as Bishop Lynch outclassed Plano Prestonwood, 25-21, 25-15, 25-20 in a TAPPS Class 5A semifinal at Corsicana High School.
Prestonwood (30-5) played its best set in the third, racing out to a 7-2 lead. Bishop Lynch (32-8) tied it at 10, and the set was tied on eight occasions. Lynch rallied late and scored six of the final seven points.
Senior Maggie Joyce added seven kills and a block for Lynch. Junior Haley Puddy added four kills and two blocks.
Ashley Morgan finished with nine kills and an ace to lead Prestonwood. Breanna Herron and Catherine Cranston each added three kills.
Bishop Lynch, the defending state champion, advances to face Ursuline in the TAPPS 5A final at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Corsicana.
Ursuline d. TCA-Addison, 25-20, 25-18, 25-14: Ursuline (24-9) scored the final six points of the first set and never looked back on the way to a sweep of TCA-Addison in a TAPPS Class 5A semifinal at Corsicana High School.
Kendall Kazor was the dominant player in the final two sets. The Ursuline senior reeled off six kills and multiple blocks. Seniors Sarah Lengyel and Haley Sheffield also dominated at net, using their height to frustrate a smaller TCA group.
Ursuline (24-9) advances to face Bishop Lynch in the TAPPS 5A finals at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Corsicana.
Colleyville Heritage d. Mansfield Timberview, 25-21, 25-16, 25-23: Anna Walsh and Maddie Jones had 11 kills apiece to sweep Mansfield Timberview in a 5A area playoff at Irving MacArthur.
Alex Janak added 30 assists, two aces and five digs for Heritage, the second-ranked team in the area.
Heritage (41-5) advances to face the winner of Friday’s match between No. 3 Coppell and Waco Midway in the regional quarterfinals.
Allen d. Rowlett, 25-22, 22-25, 25-27, 25-14, 15-9: Eighth-ranked Allen survived a five-set thriller against Rowlett in an area-round playoff at Carrollton R.L. Turner High School.
Camryn Freiberg led the way with 18 kills, four blocks and 10 digs. Chandler Atwood added 16 kills, and Sheridan Ralston had six blocks and 11 digs.
Allen (26-14) advances to face McKinney in a 5A regional quarterfinal.
Lovejoy d. Mansfield Legacy, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19: Sarah Langs tallied 14 kills to pace Lovejoy past Mansfield Legacy in an area-round playoff at Coppell High School.
Jordan Fate added 36 assists for the five-time defending state champions, and Molly Lacey had a team-high 13 digs.
Lovejoy (35-9) advances to face Red Oak in the regional quarterfinals.
Carrollton Prince of Peace d. Parish Episcopal, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21, 26-24: Senior Stephanie Shadley recorded 12 kills to help Carrollton Prince of Peace outlast Parish Episcopal in four sets in a TAPPS Class 4A semifinal at Corsicana High School.
Prince of Peace (39-5) went on a 12-1 run to take an 18-11 lead in the third set. Both teams led by as many as three points during the final set.
Prince of Peace advances to face the winner between Victoria St. Joseph and Sugar Land Ft. Bend Christian in the TAPPS 4A championship at 9 a.m. Saturday in Corsicana.
