No. 7 Rockwall-Heath claims 12-5A volleyball title
Multiple attackers key to second straight district championship
ROCKWALL — The seventh-ranked Rockwall-Heath volleyball team can topple opponents with a variety of offensive weapons.
Twelve different Heath players recorded at least one kill Tuesday during a 25-11, 25-16, 25-19 victory against rival Rockwall.
“We want to use all of our talent,” Heath coach Maggie Younger said. “That’s been our goal heading into the postseason.”
The victory clinched a second consecutive District 12-5A championship for Heath (27-8, 10-0), which hasn’t lost a set in its 10 district victories.
Senior outside hitter Regina Tillis has been Heath’s primary attacker for the past four seasons. The LSU pledge tallied eight kills Tuesday and has 310 this season.
As teams began to key their defense to Tillis, Heath was forced to discover more ways to win. Its progress was apparent Tuesday: Junior Haley Coleman notched a team-high 10 kills, senior Kailey Peters had five and two more Heath players had four kills each.
Sophomore Alex Nolan racked up five blocks, and Claire Carpenter had five aces.
Heath lost in the area round last season to Plano West, but Younger is confident her seasoned squad is capable of a deeper run next month.
“We had a tough preseason schedule and it prepared us,” Younger said. “We’ve played everybody in 10-5A except for Allen, and they’ve all given us good looks.”
Despite the loss, Rockwall (19-15, 9-2) remained in second place in the district standings and has clinched a playoff berth. Both of its losses have come against Heath.
