Centennial defeats rival Frisco to share District 9-4A volleyball lead
Win snaps 3-way tie; match with Prosper will be for top spot
FRISCO — The first set between No. 4 Frisco and No. 6 Frisco Centennial saw the score tied 11 times with eight lead changes.
It was a fitting appetizer for the main course that followed Tuesday — a wild four-set Centennial victory, 25-22, 17-25, 25-19, 25-21.
“In this district, it seems like every match is like that,” Centennial coach Kari Bensend said. “It’s so tough, and everybody in this district is so strong. Everyone’s out for blood every night.”
The victory broke a three-way tie for first place atop the District 9-4A standings, leaving Prosper and Centennial (27-7, 7-1) tied for first.
Those two teams will meet Friday to break the tie. Frisco (28-6, 6-2) remains on track for a playoff berth but will need some help to earn the district’s top seed.
Frisco rallied late in the fourth set to turn a six-point deficit into a 20-20 game. But it then committed three errors in the final six points and gave way to Centennial’s 5-1 run to seal the deal.
Centennial junior hitter Micaya White was unstoppable when the ball came her way. The Texas pledge racked up nine of her 32 kills during the final set.
White also added 20 digs and six blocks.
“She’s generally our leader on offense, but she was also a leader on defense for us tonight,” Bensend said of White. “When she does her job on defense, then everybody else does theirs.”
Frisco, which had its best season in two decades last year by reaching the regional finals, is 0-16 in district matches against Centennial since 2006.
