Volleyball playoff roundup: Coppell, McKinney Boyd punch tickets to state tourney
GLEN ROSE — Texas pledge Chiaka Ogbogu had a match-high 16 kills, and Kylie Pickrell registered a team-leading 38 assists as defending Class 5A state champion Coppell earned a trip back to the state tournament by beating Colleyville Heritage, 25-17, 27-25, 27-25, on Saturday in the Region I final at Tiger Arena.
The state tournament is Thursday through Saturday at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. The pairings for the state semifinals will be announced Sunday.
Colleyville Heritage was ranked No. 2 in the state in 5A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association and beat No. 1 Southlake Carroll in the regional semifinals. Coppell is ranked No. 4.
“Our players beat a Colleyville Heritage team that didn’t quit and was scrappy all day,” Coppell coach Julie Green said. “Heritage hits the ball hard and gives your team a lot of challenges. Our net play and blocks were the difference.”
The Cowgirls and their fans saluted Jacob Logan, a Coppell football standout who drowned last month. Chants of “state of Jake” echoed through the stands, and the team formed “21” hand signs in honor of Logan, whose jersey number was 21.
Ogbogu had key kills in each of the first two sets to set up the victory. Heritage came back from deficits of 13-7 and 15-9 in the second set, but Tulsa pledge Erica Bohannon registered key kills in that set and the final set to help Coppell advance.
Class 5A Region II
McKinney Boyd d. Plano, 3-1: In Huntsville, Krista Bukovec had 16 kills and five blocks to help McKinney Boyd beat District 10-5A rival Plano, 28-30, 25-20, 26-24, 25-21, in the 5A Region II final.
Boyd is headed back to the state tournament. It lost to Coppell in the 5A state final last season.
McKinney Boyd served with set point three times in the first set but couldn’t put the set away. Boyd, however, won the next three sets to beat Plano for the fourth time in five tries this season.
Parker Shepherd had 20 assists, and Kaley Seaber added 25 digs for Boyd. Kylie Long had 16 kills for Plano.
Class 3A Region II
Argyle d. Decatur, 3-2: At Mesquite Poteet, Sierra James served the final five points of the fifth set for Argyle, including two aces, en route to a 17-25, 29-27, 25-18, 15-25, 15-9 win over Decatur in the 3A Region II final. James finished with eight kills, six aces and six digs to help send her team to the state tournament for the first time in the program’s 13-year history.
Argyle got back in the match by winning the second set, 29-27. The final two points of the set came on a tip from freshman Eighmy Dobbins and another from senior captain Blair O’Brien, Argyle’s lone four-year starter.
Dobbins finished with 15 kills and five digs, while O’Brien dished out 56 assists and also had 15 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Katy Keenan had 14 kills and two blocks, and junior outside hitter Brooke Robertson had a team-high 18 kills.
