Volleyball playoff roundup: Coppell rallies to beat defending champ Hebron in five games
Cassidy Pickrell had 18 kills and 15 digs, and Sarah Arnold handed out 29 assists as Coppell rallied to beat defending Class 5A state champion Hebron, 22-25, 23-25, 28-26, 25-21, 15-10, on Tuesday in a 5A Region I volleyball quarterfinal.
Erica Bohannon added 13 kills in Coppell's win, Kierra Holst had 10 kills, Bear Bass dished out 23 assists and Megan Kennedy and Kristen Dickerson combined for 39 digs.
Coppell advanced to play Arlington in a regional semifinal
at 6 p.m. Friday at McMurry University in Abilene.
Arlington 3, Amarillo 0: Arlington coach Sue Cauley sees her team peaking at the right time, an observation in part verified by Arlington’s 3-0 Class 5A regional quarterfinal victory against Amarillo.
Albany Dawson led the team with 18 kills in its 25-16, 26-24, 25-22 victory Tuesday. Ashley Zang added 17 digs and Amelia Shoemake had 21 assists. Kaitlyn Granger and Jacqueline Vernor also contributed strongly for the Colts.
“Overall, they’re a team, and that’s what’s great about them,” Cauley said. “They play as a team. They don’t worry about who is getting the glory as long as they get the win.”
Lake Highlands 3, Rowlett 2: Lake Highlands topped Rowlett, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-12, in a 5A regional quarterfinal. In the decisive fifth set, Lake Highlands fell behind 11-9 and 12-11 before pulling through for the victory, behind solid defensive play from Katie Sefko and offense from Bonnie Vernon.
Vernon finished with 11 kills, while Matalee Reed led the team with 25. Morgan Reed had 19 digs and 47 assists. Megan Garcia had 18 digs.
Waxahachie 3, Pflugerville Connally 0: Kate Praslicka led Waxahachie (41-4) with 14 kills in a 4A regional quarterfinal match that coach Sandy Faussett acknowledged wasn’t her team’s best. Waxahachie won, 26-24, 26-24, 25-22.
“We didn’t play very well, to tell you the truth,” Faussett said. “Connally is a strong, hard-hitting team. We’re ready to regroup and be ready for the regional.” Waxahachie will play Richardson Pearce.
Lovejoy 3, Argyle 0: Lovejoy defeated Argyle in a 3A regional quarterfinal, 25-15, 25-10, 25-17. Andie Malloy had 17 kills and nine digs, Mallorie Puckett had six kills and 11 digs and Shannon Connell had 27 assists. Brooke Ray went on a nine point run with four aces in the second set.
Red Oak 3, Pflugerville Hendrickson 0: Red Oak defeated Hendrickson, 25-18, 25-11, 25-13. Caleah Wells led Red Oak with 18 kills and had 11 blocks. Kennedi Coleman had 12 kills and five blocks.
Flower Mound Marcus 3, Grapevine 2: Flower Mound Marcus defeated Grapevine, 17-25, 25-21, 25-22, 16-25, 15-13, in a 5A regional quarterfinal. Grapevine had defeated area No. 1 Southlake Carroll in the previous round.
