Pearce cruises past Creekview, into volleyball regional semifinals
RICHARDSON — Richardson Pearce recovered quickly from an early lack of coordination to win its regional quarterfinal match against Carrollton Creekview in straight sets, 25-17, 25-14, 25-16.
In the first set, Pearce started out shaky, its teamwork at the net looking like it needed improvement as Creekview took an early 3-0 lead. Pearce rebounded to tie the set at 6, and though it struggled to complete digs in the early part of the match, it eventually pulled ahead 20-13 before winning the set.
Pearce came out stronger to begin the second set, winning the first point before serving the ball out of bounds twice to allow Creekview to tie the set at 5. Both teams struggled with out-of-bounds serves and judgment calls on questionable balls.
Both teams relied on strong setters throughout the second set, and Pearce became much more composed and aggressive at the net. Pearce eventually took an 11-point lead, 21-10, before Creekview’s Kasie Trigg smashed an aggressive kill, ending Pearce’s momentum.
But a bad kill attempt by Trigg seconds later brought the set to game point, and Creekview couldn’t hold Pearce for the second set in a row.
The third set opened much like the others. Although Pearce won the first point of the set, the Pearce girls let Creekview hang with them through the first 20 points of the set, and Creekview took the lead twice. But after tying the set at 14, Pearce again pulled ahead and went on to win.
It was a match marked by long rallies. Endurance was key, and strong play by Pearce middle blocker Shelby Sullivan carried the team. Creekview’s Peyton Hurst and Rachel Kirchner were also aggressive at the net but couldn’t match the strength and accuracy of Sullivan’s kills, which improved throughout the night.
Pearce will play Waxahachie in the regional semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday at the Garland Special Events Center.
