Track and field notebook: Carrollton Newman Smith senior grabs 3 golds
AUSTIN — Carrollton Newman Smith’s Courtney Okolo continued her dominance in the Class 4A 400-meter dash, winning her third consecutive state title and doing so in style.
Okolo set a state record with a time of 52.40 seconds.
“I’ve been thinking about it for a long time,” Okolo said of the record. “To get it my senior year, it’s really amazing.”
She didn’t have much time to revel in her accomplishment, though.
Less than an hour later, Okolo won the 200 meters. She finished the night running the anchor leg on Newman Smith’s 4x400 relay team, closing a large deficit to Lancaster in the final 100 meters to win her third gold medal with a time of 3:47.11.
Hurdler follows dad to title: Bryan Adams hurdler Bryce Grace won the 4A 110 hurdles with a time of 13.79 seconds. Lancaster’s Tequille Jackson finished third.
Grace, a Baylor signee, lives in McKinney, but has transferred to The Colony and then Bryan Adams following his father, Ron, a football and track coach. He finished second in the 110 hurdles in 2011 for Bryan Adams.
“I wanted to keep training with him, because I knew he was going to get me better,” Grace said. “I knew if I kept training with him, I could get to this point.”
Creekview’s Gonzalez wins double: After taking second in the 300 hurdles last year, Carrollton Creekview senior Melissa Gonzalez made the most of her final state meet with wins in the 300 and 100 hurdles.
“I think it went pretty well,” Gonzalez said with a smile.
It also went pretty well for Forney’s Kiana Hawn, who was second to Gonzalez in both races.
Briefly: Highland Park’s Natalie Rathjen broke the 4A record in the 3,200 meters but didn’t win the gold. Willis’ Cali Roper won the title with a time of 10:35.19, nearly two seconds ahead of Rathjen. … Little Elm’s Marika Brown was edged out by two-hundredths of a second for the 4A 100-meter title by Beaumont Ozen’s Bealoved Brown. … Fort Worth Southwest’s Robbie Rhodes, best known for setting a state record with eight touchdown catches in a game in the fall, made a mark as a sprinter Friday. As the anchor leg, he reeled in the field to help Southwest win the 4x100 relay, then won the 200 meters. … Fort Worth Boswell’s Lakan Taylor tied a 4A record in winning the 4A girls pole vault (13-3). … Melissa’s Rebecca Ulrich won the first race of the day, the Class 2A girls 3,200 meters. … Mansfield Summit’s Larron Black won the 4A 300-meter hurdles, and finished fourth in the 110 hurdles.
