Senior’s three goals propel St. Mark’s to another SPC lacrosse title

AUSTIN — Gil Cassagne scored three goals to lead St. Mark’s past Episcopal School of Dallas, 7-6, in the Southwest Preparatory Conference championship match at St. Andrews School.

Cassagne scored the first goal less then two minutes into the first period then added a second-period goal and finally broke a 5-5 tie just 1:06 into the fourth period when he slashed toward the net, reversed direction with a spin move and rocketed the ball past the Episcopal goalie.

“We were ready to play today,” said Cassagne, who has committed to play at Division III Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. “The team win is the most important thing. I was glad that I was prepared to do my part.”

St. Mark’s won its third SPC title in four years and ninth in 10 seasons, improving to 15-1 this season. ESD fell to 9-5.

Nick Mahowald, Matt Murphy, Chris Marlow and Danny Koudelka also scored for St. Mark’s. ESD was led by Harvard-bound Phillip Wagley, who had two goals, and James Collins, who had a goal and two assists.

St. Mark’s advances to the Texas High School Lacrosse Championships May 6-8 at Shenandoah, Texas.
