St. Mark's wrestlers win with a 'total team effort'
St. Mark’s proved that its whole was better than the superior parts that may have existed on some of the 19 other teams that competed in the Texas Prep State Wrestling Championships on Saturday.
St. Mark’s, which hosted the tournament, had eight wrestlers reach the championship, but only 135-pound Joe Loftus won an individual weight division title. Still, its seven second-place finishes, two third -place finishes and two fourth -place finishes propelled St. Mark’s to the team title.
It finished with 224 team points, easily outdistancing runner-up Houston St. Thomas, which finished with 181.50. Trinity Christian Addison, which had three individual state champions in 145-pound Joe Mills, 171-pound Johann Sarna and 215-pound Chase Scott, finished third with 168 points.
The team title was St. Mark’s second in the last three years and the 17th private or public school state title in the illustrious career of coach Rick Ortega.
”Everybody did their job,” Ortega said. “We didn’t have all 15 wrestlers placed but all 15 contributed. I’ve always believed as a coach that’s what it takes to win. You can’t have just a couple of really outstanding wrestlers and expect to win a tough tournament like this. It was a total team effort.”
St. Mark’s Loftus was the only wrestler to win his title match with a fall. He pinned Houston Episcopal’s Will Kargas at the 2:56 mark of their match.
”I just went with the chicken wing, tucked the head and flipped him,” said Loftus, who was second at 130-pounds last year. “It was a good day for us.”
Two-man team: Tiny Irving Faustina, which has approximately 100 students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade placed 13th in the fnal team standings despite having just a two-man team: brothers Dominic and Zachary Sipe.
Dominic, a junior, won the 152-pound title, with a 6-1 decision over St. Mark’s Jimmy Papin. Zachary Sipe, a freshman, placed sixth in the 135-pound weight division.
