Defending state champ Allen uses late interception to hold off Hebron, 36-17

CARROLLTON — Hebron had an uphill climb against top-ranked Allen on Friday night and nearly reached the summit.

But the defending state champions showed their depth, strength and resilience during the fourth quarter to avoid the upset and claim a 36-17 victory at Hawk Stadium.

Allen didn’t allow a point in the second half and limited Hebron to 95 yards of offense during that span.

Hebron’s hopes of an upset came to halt in the fourth quarter, when Allen’s Chad Adams intercepted Hebron quarterback Carson Proffitt at the goal line. Proffitt threw into triple coverage, and Adams ran the ball back to the 37-yard line.

Allen (4-0) marched down the field on its ensuing drive, and quarterback Kyler Murray hit Josh Pettijohn for a 25-yard touchdown to seal the win.

Hebron’s defense kept it in the game through three quarters. It limited Allen from making big plays and put the offense in position for success.

Hebron, however, was without starting running back Treyvon Hughes, who dressed but did not play. Eight different players recorded at least one carry, but Hebron averaged only 2.2 yards per rush.

Hebron (2-2) fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter and failed to convert a pair of Allen turnovers into scores. Allen had only turned the ball over once in its first three games.

Allen, which committed 12 penalties for 101 yards, continued to make mistakes in the first half, and Hebron didn’t let them go unpunished any longer.

An errant snap during a second-quarter punt sailed over Cole Carter’s head and out the back of the end zone for a safety. Hebron followed with a six-play, 63-yard touchdown drive, capped by Proffitt’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Jamal Adams.

Allen temporarily slowed Hebron’s momentum when Mayomi Olootu returned the ensuing kickoff 105 yards for a touchdown.

Hebron answered, though, with another efficient touchdown drive, this time ending with Proffitt’s 1-yard scoring run.

The touchdown cut Allen’s lead to 20-17, but that was as close as Hebron could get. Neither team scored during the third quarter, and Murray had a touchdown pass and run in the fourth.
