Plano East trails, 7-0, then reels off 42 straight points in rout of Naaman Forest
MURPHY — Garland Naaman Forest struck first, but Plano East struck a lot more often for a 42-7 win Friday at Kimbrough Stadium.
After Naaman Forest (1-1) scored on the opening possession, Plano East reeled off six unanswered touchdowns to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Plano East used a two-pronged attack with the arm of quarterback Miles Thompson and the legs of running back Lionel Willis. Thompson was 24-of-31 passing for 318 yards and two touchdowns, while Willis ran 17 times for 96 yards and two more touchdowns.
Michael Nelson was the workhorse for the Naaman Forest with 27 carries for 151 yards. Naaman Forest was hobbled by 16 penalties for 129 yards.
Plano East led by seven at halftime, but quickly doubled its lead with a four-play scoring drive to open the third quarter. Willis scored from four yards out for a 21-7 lead.
A 23-yard interception return for a touchdown by Landis Durham gave Plano East a 28-7 later in the third quarter. Then on the first play of the fourth quarter, backup quarterback Keith Long reached into the endzone from the one for a 35-7 lead.
When the game kicked off, Naaman Forest didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard. The game’s opening drive took just two plays: a 24-yard completion to Mike Iheme and a 39-yard touchdown catch by Chase Harris. Both throws were from Justin Walker.
Plano East responded, but a bit more patiently. Plano East took 11 plays to tie the score with Willis steamrolling into the end zone from nine yards out.
Plano East took the lead with 9:45 left in the half with Thompson finding Denim Sansom in the end zone for a 40-yard score.
