Carter's Corey Avery rushes for 297 yards in 37-27 win over Lakeview
On a night when the temperature read 102 degrees at the start of the game, Carter running back Corey Avery sliced through the heat and the Garland Lakeview defense for four touchdowns as Carter won, 37-27, at Kincaide Stadium.
Avery carried the ball 27 times for 297 yards as Class 4A Carter (1-0) defeated its Class 5A nondistrict foe.
Lakeview Centennial backup quarterback Trent Edwards came off the bench after halftime and gave his team a lift, completing eight of 13 pass attempts for 110 yards.
Lakeview Centennial running back Jakyrin Lang finished the game with 86 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries as Centennial clawed back from a 30-6 deficit.
Most of the first half was filled with penalties and turnovers for both teams.
Carter began and ended the half in impressive fashion thanks to Avery, who had 203 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries before halftime.
Avery's 1-yard touchdown run less than two minutes into the game gave Carter a 6-0 lead. The drive started with a 39-yard kickoff return by Avery.
Avery finished off the first half with a 51-yard touchdown run with 3:13 left in the second quarter.
While Avery was explosive, otherwise both teams struggled to move the ball in the first two quarters. Carter lost two fumbles, threw an interception and racked up seven penalties for 55 yards in the first half.
Carter had a chance to run out the clock late in the first half but instead elected to pass with a minute left, resulting in its second lost fumble.
Lakeview Centennial fumbled three times in the first half, but only lost one, and had four penalties for 30 yards.
Carter outgained Lakeview Centennial, 500-319.
