For the first time ever, all of Texas’ public-school football championships will be held in one location. The University Interscholastic League announced Thursday that AT&T Stadium will be the site for its football finals, held Dec. 14 and Dec. 19-21.
It will be the fourth straight season for a central site location, and the third year that all 11-man games will be held at AT&T (or Cowboys) Stadium.
“For the first time ever, all football state qualifying teams will have the unique and extraordinary experience of playing at AT&T Stadium,” UIL athletic director Mark Cousins said in a press release. “We will work with AT&T Stadium and the Dallas Cowboys organization to make this year’s championship event the best yet.”
The biggest changes come for the six-man games, and the Class 3A-Division I game.
Six-man championships have been held at Abilene’s Shotwell Stadium over the past few seasons, but moved to AT&T Stadium after that divisions’ coaches lobbied for a move to one of the state’s premier venues. The 3A-Division I game has been held on the Friday before all the other 11-man finals, since that playoff bracket had one fewer week of games.
The UIL has determined the site for the Conference 5A football state championships since 2006.
