McKinney Boyd takes early volleyball showdown over No. 1 Lovejoy
McKINNEY — In an early season meeting between two of the state’s top volleyball programs, McKinney Boyd outlasted five-time state champion Lovejoy, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18, on Tuesday at Boyd.
“We have a lot of talent, and we blocked very well,” Boyd coach Kelly Arbabi said. “I hate the word rebuilding. That’s not necessarily where we or Lovejoy are at. But we’ve got players who have played behind good players, and they’re getting more experience.”
Boyd mixed six players along its front line led by seniors Bailey Bingamin and Lauren Petrisin with junior Ashleigh Martin. Sophomore Jill Duffin and freshman Jordan Kiley show promise. Junior Sam Thompson isn’t tall but got a half-dozen blocks.
Boyd (2-0) reached the Class 5A Region II semifinals last season after getting to the 2011 state final.
Lovejoy (1-1) is coming off the Class 4A state title after winning four consecutive Class 3A state titles. Lovejoy was No. 1 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association preseason state poll.
Lovejoy’s 6-2 sophomore Sarah Langs returns along with Katelyn McKenzie. They’ll have to jell with sophomore setter Jordan Fate and freshman hitter Callie Holden.
“We’re growing, and we don’t expect to be the best team on Aug. 13,” Lovejoy coach Ryan Mitchell said.
